Andrew and Tara got married on a mountaintop at Granby Ranch in Colorado. Beyond the gorgeous views of the Rockies, this was a place where they had shared many winter ski adventures over the years. It felt fitting for them to bring all of their loved ones to a setting so connected to their relationship—a place that reflected adventure, beauty, and the intentional life they were building together.

This wedding was also a unique experience for us.

Andrew is our nephew, and when he and Tara asked us to fly to Colorado to photograph the start of their marriage, we were deeply honored.

We spend a lot of wedding days looking for moments and interactions between family members and guests. We collect the facial expressions, embraces, laughter, funny quirks. All the little things we hope will become cherished memories of the people who shared that day with them.

Andrew and Tara’s wedding was especially meaningful because we already knew so many of those people.

We knew how fun it was when the more serious family members were letting loose on the dance floor. We understood the tears of a mother listening to toasts from her other three children. And we knew the significance behind the joy of the spontaneous dance party that broke out beyond the reception tent with the Aunt with Down syndrome.

We’ve photographed hundreds of weddings over the past 16 years, but this one gave us a new sense of clarity about the responsibility we hold to tell the stories of our couples and the people they love.

There is so much more to a wedding than pretty pictures and carefully curated portraits. These days are filled with windows into the souls of the people who surround us, across generations.

The privilege of noticing those moments and preserving reminders that say, “This is who this person was,” is why, after all these years, we still photograph weddings.
