Levon and Lydia recently moved to the DC area from Wisconsin and wanted to have their engagement photos in Shenandoah. The original plan was to wake up early and get to the Stony Man mountain overlook for sunrise. However, the forecast made it clear that we weren’t going to get much of a sunrise so we decided to meet up early morning instead. In exchange for sunrise we ended up with something completely different: dense fog! At first this seemed disappointing that we came all this way and hiked to the top of the mountain and couldn’t see more than five into the distance. However, the three of us quickly realized we were experiencing something unique and special and embraced it. I have often found that the unknown of risky weather forecasts can lead to the most incredible results when it comes to portraits. Some of my favorite results as a Virginia engagement photographer have happened in the in-between moments of massive thunderstorms. Similarly, this foggy day on a mountain top will always be one of my most memorable engagement sessions.
